What year and discipline are you in?
I'm currently in my fourth year of the Mechanical Engineering Co-op program.
Why did you go into engineering?
When I got to university, I had very little idea of what I wanted to do long term. Everything interested me, and I think I changed my major three times during my first year in the Faculty of Science. During this time, I lived in residence and became friends with many first-year engineering students. We studied together and worked on projects together until I eventually realized what they were studying was way more interesting than my own classes, so I decided to switch over and haven't looked back since.
What do you want to do as a career?
I see the engineering field as a whole as progressing primarily in a few directions: the advancement of automation, the advancement of transportation infrastructure and the advancement of renewable energy technologies and applications. Ideally, I would like to pursue a career in a research and development role in one of these industries. I love mechanical design, and I believe that the furthering of these industries will contribute positively to society. As with most engineering students, Elon Musk's group of companies and Mythbusters have been inspirational to me. However, the individuals who truly inspire me to get to work in the morning and work hard are other U of A engineering students.
What hobbies you have been working on over COVID?
Outside of COVID, I usually spend a lot of time at the gym, but I've had to adapt to outdoor activities over the past six months. I'm an avid outdoorsman, so I've spent a lot of time hiking and cross country running. Additionally, I've spent a lot of time reading history books and listening to metal, rock, and punk music.
Do you have a fun fact, skill, or interest?
I have actually seen a wild whitetail deer on campus, and I have photo evidence to prove it.
